In summer the shrub blooms purple, and the whole plant gives off a powerful, peppery scent. Its small black berries, used for centuries in place of pepper, become the Chaste Berry Monk’s Pepper of Place des Épices, from a hardy, fragrant shrub grown organically in Morocco. They deliver a mild heat with aromatic, slightly herbal notes. Fill a pepper mill with them as a gentle alternative to black pepper, and grind them over lamb or game.
